HK offers more than Singapore
Baat Gwaa bumped into a former colleague at the Rugby Sevens. After we had chatted for a few minutes, she asked me: "Should I stay or should I go?" "You must stay. The weather is great and we have a good crowd here," I replied.
"No, I am not talking about the Sevens. I am asking whether I should stay in Hong Kong. I've been offered a job in Singapore," she explained.
In recent years, Singapore has been competing for foreign investment and overseas talent with regional rivals including Hong Kong.
Many detractors say we are losing our competitive edge to Singapore because of our high costs of living. The island state is trying to corner the market on global talent by introducing policies to encourage the hiring of foreigners.
A headhunter friend, Lily, reassured Baat Gwaa that our city is still in a favourable position. The costs may be high but the prospects are greater.
