Delay that trip to Sapporo and satisfy your Hokkaido-crab craving at Kanizen, a Japanese speciality restaurant opened by the owners of Katte Shabu Shabu restaurant, which has branches in Causeway Bay and in Tai Hang. The eatery is a three-minute walk from the Wan Chai MTR station.

Behind the discrete façade, intended to create a sense of privacy, massive red king crabs (Tarabagani), weighing two to three kilos, and smaller horsehair crabs (Kegani) greet you in tanks kept at zero to three degree Celsius. The owners say the crabs are freshly shipped from Tokyo and Hokkaido three times a week. They also serve prefrozen queen crabs (Matsubagani).

Kanizen can seat up to 49 people at its U-shaped bar (serving 13 individual hotpots), three four-person sofa booths and three private rooms upstairs for parties of six to 10 people. There is a minimum charge of HK$500 per head for dinner at the bar and sofa booths, and HK$1,000 per head for the private rooms.

For lunch, served from noon to 2.30pm, there’s a choice of six set menus at HK$138 to HK$298 each, featuring the three crabs mentioned and a choice of beef or pork tempura, grilled crab legs, minced crab meatloaf, steamed crabmeat on rice and shabu shabu. All lunch sets include a grilled Edamame appetiser, steamed egg custard with crab meat, assorted vegetables, rice or udon and ice cream. For dinner, from 6pm to 10 pm, there are four shabu shabu set menus from HK$480 to
HK$1,080 each, featuring crabs and Sendai A5 wagyu beef. The set features Japanese tofu with crab, crab roe paste, crab dumplings, vegetables, crab congee and dessert. The à la carte menu offers crab tempuras and other crab dishes.
