Sector ready for a blast
update on Friday, July 1, 2011

With the surge in local large-scale infrastructure projects, the demand for experienced professionals among construction companies remains high, despite the seasonal blip. This trend is evident across a wide range of roles at the mid-senior level, from commercial managers and planners to tunnelling and blasting engineers.

The demand is high among engineering consultancies seeking expertise in structural, geotechnical, mechanical and electrical engineering. Professionals at all levels, particularly registered engineers in their respective disciplines, will find multiple opportunities.

However, it is not just the volume of new projects that causes labour shortage. The number of professionals entering the construction and engineering sector has been dwindling over the past decade, with young graduates lured by other industries. Compounding the issue is the ageing workforce, which may require government support in sourcing talent outside Hong Kong.

There is a strong pipeline of projects in Hong Kong, on mainland China and across Asia for candidates who are geographically mobile and interested in international experience.

Danny Dawson, is director at Redpath Partners, a recruitment business for the property and construction industries
