The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) advertises job openings practically every week. As of March, the company had 13,829 employees in Hong Kong.
"Our staffing levels have increased significantly in recent years, and the five network expansion projects in Hong Kong alone will require more than 750 additional staff at the peak of the construction period in 2013," says Vincent Luk, general manager of human resources. "More than 1,000 railway operations vacancies were filled last year and 430 new recruits were hired for the projects division."
The company has increased its apprenticeship intake. Jobs have become available in a wide range of positions such as IT, project management, and health and safety. MTR shopping centres are looking for leasing personnel to undertake letting, direct marketing, administration and budget preparation, and market research and retail studies.
To ensure staff loyalty, career development opportunities and competitive employment terms and conditions have been worked out.
"Last year, more than 5,396 training courses were delivered across the company covering about 6.4 trainee man-days per employee," says Luk.
The MTR has won local and international awards for its strong training programmes. Staff motivation programmes - such as "Living the MTR Values Award Scheme" and "VMV Heroes" - increase staff loyalty and their alignment with the MTR's vision, mission and values.
