The aviation industry has always fascinated peoples’ imagination. A flight attendant’s job is one of the most sought after in this sector. Young graduates are attracted to its glamorous lifestyle and the opportunity of travelling around the world.
According to the Hong Kong International Airport Master Plan 2030, the city is tipped to post an average annual growth of 3.2 per cent in air traffic until 2030. Airbus and Boeing – two major passenger aircraft manufacturers – forecast an average increase of 4.5 per cent in passenger air traffic per year, while Asia-Pacific projects an average rise of 6 per cent per annum. Most notably, China expects an average 7 per cent increase in passenger air traffic per year, the highest in the world.
The four passenger airlines in Hong Kong, namely Cathay Pacific Airways, Dragonair, Hong Kong Airlines, and Hong Kong Express Airlines, currently have a total of 140 aircraft.
However, if we look at their order book, they expect to receive 140 additional aircraft in the next 10 years. With the increase in fleet size, and the possible opening of a third runway in Hong Kong, we are looking at thousands of new job openings.
To recruit the necessary talent for these positions, employers will likely offer them higher pay going forward.
