Management trainee programmes in Hong Kong are popular with multinational companies and some locally listed firms in the banking, property, insurance, retail, hotel and consumer industries. Companies tend to hire candidates with a high grade point average and who fit the company culture.

Programmes normally range from one to three years, mainly targeting fresh graduates. Some companies require at least one year’s work experience. Leadership experience in student organisations, clubs, volunteer work or community service is highly valued. Student athletes are likewise considered.

The management trainee programme provides candidates the opportunity to be taught in different divisions from front line operations to back office support so they can learn skills which will equip them for management.

In multinational companies, trainees are assigned to mainland or overseas offices to learn about the local culture. Trainees are expected to monitor their own progress.

Regular communication between the trainee, line manager and programme co-ordinator is encouraged for a thorough performance review, after which successful candidates will be offered a permanent position in the company.
