Ernst & Young is set to recruit graduates as trainee accountants. The firm has already increased headcount this year by taking on about 2,000 people from universities in Hong Kong and the mainland, and a further 500-plus with some professional experience.

Graduates from all disciplines can apply, but interested candidates should be able to show strong communication and interpersonal skills, and have the ability work effectively in a team.

"These are the personalities we look for," says Michael Wong, Greater China people leader, Ernst & Young.

"You need to work with your boss, colleagues and clients - not on your own."

All new hires can expect to attend a four-week orientation programme dealing with auditing and taxation. There is also a conversion course to give non-accounting majors the necessary level of professional knowledge.

"This provides a bridge between textbook theories and practical applications," Wong says.

"It helps transform students into productive members of staff."

Employees also receive a personalised "Learning Map" at the start of each year. This gives them a clear picture of the courses they should take and the skill sets they need to acquire in the coming 12 months.

"Young people should have a good attitude towards learning and be prepared for long work hours," Wong says. "Being able to complete smaller tasks well shows you are capable and is a sign to your boss that you are ready for more responsibilities. This is the way to progress on your career path."
