CPA Australia's annual Career Expo not only provides an opportunity for fresh accounting graduates, intermediary and more experienced accounting professionals to meet face-to-face with potential employers. The event also offers participants in-depth insights into the latest accounting and auditing trends.

The event, being staged for a seventh consecutive year, takes place today at the Conrad Hotel and features exhibitors from the accounting and banking industries.

Accounting professionals will also share knowledge gained from their own experiences. For example, how they manage work-life balance and completed their CPA Australia professional qualifications while meeting work commitments.

Accounting and financial firms, including the Big Four and global banks, will also offer insights into the latest trends and career opportunities, such as working with mainland clients.

Lawrence Fok, FCPA (Aust.), president for Greater China of CPA Australia, says the expo is a chance for participants to get noticed, get connected and get ahead.

"Whether an individual is a student, fresh graduate or a more experienced professional, the event will provide a platform where employers and potential employees can meet in an informal setting," says Fok, senior vice-president for finance at Towngas China.

To benefit from the experience, Fok recommends that participants prepare themselves with relevant questions for potential employers.

Fok says having grown significantly, the expo has become an important meeting point for employers and employment candidates. Last year, more than 1,000 participants joined the event.

Adding a further dimension, from March 16 to April 16, aspiring accountants will be able, for the first time, to connect directly to an e-platform organised by CPA Australia, where they can explore PowerPoint presentations, company profiles and career opportunities offered by leading employers in the accounting and finance sectors in Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. An online chat room will open on March 17 and 18 allowing candidates to communicate directly with employers.

Fok believes the CPA Australia qualification provides the technical, business, personal effectiveness and leadership skills that can provide a stepping stone to other areas of business management.

With more than 129,000 members worldwide, including over 13,000 CPA Australia members based in Greater China, Fok says the organisation offers a unique network. It supports members through education and training to maintain their professional competence, and add value to their professional development, recognition and standing.

Fok says many CPA Australia members move into senior management as chief finance officers and CEOs.

Because of the knowledge and flexibility a CPA Australia qualification offers, members are not confined to the financial environment.

"A distinguishing feature of the CPA Program is the diversity, preparedness and mobility it offers for those prepared to seize opportunities," says Fok, who is responsible for operations in more than 90 mainland locations for Towngas China.
