Forget about fancy titles

A friend in the human resources industry told Baat Gwaa one rather curious business behaviour in Hong Kong. The bosses generally don't like to admit they are the bosses.

She explained it was because they wanted to leave a back door for themselves in case it all goes pear-shaped.

"Anything can happen. A chief executive officer can lose everything overnight. Having such a top title could be a burden sometimes, especially for a failed CEO. It can have negative implications on professional ability and affect employability. That's why many prefer to have a director title as an escape hatch, plus it's easier to find a director-level post than a CEO one," she said.

Speaking of titles, she pointed out that fancy job titles were all the rage these days, but warned that they did not often reflect the nature or seniority of the post.

"These titles are quite misleading. There are a lot of marketing specialist jobs available, but their salaries don't often measure up to that of a manager. Job seekers should not be fooled by the superficial packaging; job nature, career prospects and remuneration should be the priorities," she stressed.

Baat Gwaa agrees we should be realistic and all that glitters is not gold.
