Beating the World Cup blues
Baat Gwaa

A senior manager friend called up to pick Baat Gwaa's brain on how to motivate staff during the post-World Cup period.

Her company allowed employees to work flexible hours during the month-long tournament, which meant they could come in late to recover from a previous night of watching games and stay late to finish work. She said this arrangement had helped to build morale in the office. But after the World Cup, the mood and performance of her staff became sluggish.

Baat Gwaa rang up a human resources friend to get some tips. Layla is a firm believer that happy staff are more productive staff.

She says it is most important to build staff morale through celebration and a culture of teamwork.

"Celebrate doesn't necessarily mean throwing parties. For example, you can 'celebrate' summer. Hot weather, cool clothes, so why not have a summer dress code for staff to create a relaxing workplace? You can ask those who have to meet clients to dress properly, but allow them to dress down when they don't have business meetings."

Baat Gwaa agrees that hot weather can make you hot under the collar, moody and unproductive.
