Tsim Sha Tsui: Busy Suzie

A former lighthouse building may seem an unlikely location for an ultramodern Japanese restaurant.

But the historic structure, where Hong Kong's typhoon signals used to be hoisted, now houses a round robatayaki restaurant and lounge bar, with interiors created by husband and wife Patrick Gilles and Dorothee Boissier, who previously worked with Philippe Starck and Christian Liaigre, and whose other restaurant projects have included New York's Buddakan, London's Cha Cha Moon and Istanbul's Hakkasan.

The name is a word play on "Lazy Susan" - the term for the turntables used by restaurants to allow all diners easy access to shared dishes - and alludes to the frenetic atmosphere in the dining area.

The restaurant serves a broad range of Japanese cuisine, but robatayaki specials are its signature. Robatayaki cooking was developed by fishermen in Sendai, and involves dishes cooked over open flames - a speciality of chef Tonoyama Mitsuo and his team.

Favourites include Miyazaki A5 beef sirloin skewers at HK$238, Yamaguchi chicken skewers at HK$75 and a range of fresh seafood items. Other options include a selection of signature appetisers, sushi and sashimi, tempura, and assorted Japanese vegetables, imported fresh daily.

Set sampling menus are also offered, and an extensive sake list is another attraction.

Busy Suzie offers its best value with set lunches, including the seafood robatayaki set for HK$250, sushi with soba set for HK$98, and beef and chicken Teriyaki sets, also for HK$98.
