Central: Otto e Mezzo (8½) Bombana
With the opening, just around the corner from a branch of Cova, of chef Umberto Bombana’s new restaurant – named in honour of Italian movie director Federico Fellini’s movie 8 ½ – the second floor of Alexandra House is becoming something of a “Little Italy”. Both the décor and the cuisine are contemporary Italian in style, and Bombana, who used to preside over Toscana at the Ritz Carlton, is a much-acclaimed chef. Facilities include a welcoming bar lounge, and two private rooms in addition to the main dining room, and a well stocked wine cellar. A special “ageing room” is hung with hams and also ensures that cheeses and caviar are stored and showcased in optimum condition. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, and the bar stays open for afternoon tea and early evening cocktails. Signature dishes include lobster and mozzarella salad with caviar dressing, Belon oyster in bellini, roast turbot with herbs and “Mire Poix” of vegetables, clams and red wine jus, and braised veal cheek and veal fillet on porcini mushroom and barley risotto. Bombana’s name has long been synonymous with the best high-end Italian dining in Hong Kong, and devotees of the old Toscana are now settling in to a new second home. Reservations are essential. Dinner for two without wine costs about HK$1,000, and a set lunch is available at HK$330.
