Kate Tsang Yee-ki, a financial planning manager at Hang Seng Bank, has been winning awards since her university days. She was recognised as an outstanding financial management planner in a competition held by the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers and was promoted from trainee to her current position after only a year. She talks with Wong Yat-hei about her career so far.

What is your academic background?

I took up BBA in marketing at the City University of Hong Kong. I had the opportunity to study at Syracuse University in New York and to work as an intern at General Electric.

What does your job entail?

The most important aspect of my job is to understand customers within a short period of time, and then provide professional financial plans that fit each client.

What has been your major challenge?

As frontline banking staff, we need to handle complaints from time to time. No matter what kind of mood the customer is in, my job is to resolve issues and make him happy. I encourage myself to stay positive at all times. My job is not only to work with wealthy people, but to provide the same level of professional service to everyone.

What have you learned about your chosen career? What are your immediate or long-term professional plans?

Be active, humble, professional and positive. It is important to seek opportunities through which I could learn from colleagues. I would like to build my career further in the company and take some professional courses, such as certified financial planner, to deepen my knowledge.

What can you advise those who are planning to do internship or management trainee programmes?

Always be humble in dealing with clients. Try to learn more from the senior people in the industry. Keep in mind that as a trainee, you will face pressures every day. Staying positive is an important foundation in building a career.
