City University has launched Hong Kong's first master's degree in Asian and international studies.

Dr Nicholas Thomas, leader of the programme, thinks it is essential for one to understand Asia and the world in order to better comprehend and manage challenges and issues.

"This programme is designed to provide students with a deeper understanding of regional and international affairs. This knowledge will not only help to upgrade their professional abilities but will also ensure that they are equipped with the necessary tools to understand the global and regional forces that shape our world," he says. People who work in international corporations, organisations, government agencies, non-governmental organisations and the media can apply.

Course teachers are professors with research and teaching experience in international or area studies in other countries. It will be an international faculty.

Not all subjects will have examinations. Most evaluation is done through presentations and writing extensive essays.

"The course provides advanced training for students seeking to upgrade their analytical ability, research skills and data collection, and communication and presentation capacities. These skills are extremely important in the modern workplace," Thomas says.

Applicants should have a bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in Asian studies, international studies, communications, law, economics or a relevant discipline from a recognised tertiary institution. Those with one or more years of working experience in a related field will have an advantage. In the first intake, 45 places are available. Students can choose to study one year full-time or two years part-time.
