The University of Hong Kong's master of arts in transport policy and planning is specifically geared for those working in the sector.

The programme is co-organised by the department of geography, department of urban planning and design, and the department of civil engineering.

Professor Becky P.Y. Loo, of the department of geography, says the programme focuses on giving students multidisciplinary knowledge and skills in understanding the various challenges in the field of transport policy and planning.

"It offers a combination of courses, ranging from project appraisals, public transport systems, surveys, to transport laws and transport engineering," she says.

The course aims to provide the expanding transport sector in Hong Kong with well-trained professionals at the executive level.

"It caters to people who aspire to pursue careers in the transport field, with the aim of excelling and advancing in their current careers. It is suitable for people who have different academic backgrounds and work experience in [various] transport sectors. Graduates are able to meet the academic qualification to get a Chartered membership from the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport," Loo says.

Applicants must have an honours degree with appropriate experience.

The university admits about 25 students to the programme every year.

Students can complete the programme in one year of full-time study, or two to three years of part-time study.

Lessons are scheduled on weekday nights and during weekends in the afternoon.

Erico Chan, a graduate of the course, works in the airline industry as a flight dispatch training and standards manager. He says the programme was "really beneficial" to him as it gave him knowledge about "the operations of different [types] of transport".
