Master of Economics
University of Hong Kong

This programme draws the biggest numbers versus other economics-related master’s degrees in the city, says programme director Larry Qiu.

“We enrol 150 students every year. Because of its large size, the school is able to offer a very large variety of courses  for students to choose. There is a set  of theoretical courses for students who want to prepare for PhD studies, and  a set of more applied courses for  those who enter the industry after graduation,” Qiu says.

Due to its size, the school also has a strong alumni network which has proven helpful for students in finding and switching jobs, among other uses, he adds.

The programme offers advanced training in economics, with an emphasis on real world applications. “Our curriculum is designed to help students master economic analysis, use it creatively to find solutions,  and develop confidence in analysing issues and answering questions,” says Qiu.

He adds that the programme is suitable for three types of students. “The people we are looking for to join the course include those who have some economics training and consider starting a career as a professional economist, those who want to acquire advanced economics knowledge useful for them in the workplace, and those who wish to gain a systemic tool kit to understand the economic problems around us,” Qiu says.

Many students get better jobs or move to higher positions in their companies shortly after graduation from the programme. “Many of our graduates have been placed successfully in large commercial banks, large multinational corporations, and large accounting firms. Students coming from outside Hong Kong also find comparative advantages when they look for jobs in Hong Kong because Hong Kong companies are very globalised and potential employers in Hong Kong expect to benefit from our non-local graduates to bring diverse culture and ideas to their companies,” says Qiu.

Students can study full-time for one or two years, or part-time for three to four years. Most classes are held on Saturday afternoons or weekend evenings; others during business hours on weekdays. Applicants, some of whom may be invited for a qualifying interview, should hold a recognised bachelor’s degree.
