Benefiting from the infrastructure boom in Hong Kong, Leighton Contractors (Asia) is recruiting about 20 new staff to work on a long list of projects.

"We win a new project in Hong Kong once every three months on average. We have a rule that about 50 to 60 per cent of staff on new projects should be old timers and the rest new hires. Around 99 per cent of staff is locally hired," says Hamish Tyrwhitt, Leighton Asia's managing director.

The company often needs experienced engineers, quantity surveyors, supervisors and superintendents. Posts in safety, insurance and human resources also need to be filled up.

"Construction is a team sport and the most important attribute is being a strong team player who will align with the company's values," Tyrwhitt says.

"The company is strong in technology and innovation so those who wish to join us should also be strong in these areas. The biggest non-monetary benefit is training and experience," he adds.

Working on the company's different projects offers great all-round experience. There are team-based and demography-based groupings that encourage team activities such as the Young Professionals Club.

Tyrwhitt says the business outlook is great in Hong Kong and in Asia. "Our workforce has tripled and will continue to grow. A lot of projects will keep the workforce in their jobs for many years."

The company has just finished developing Ocean Park and is working on HK$65 billion worth of projects.
