Patchy hires amid gloom
Published on Thursday, 17 Nov 2011

The Hong Kong telecom job market has gone through a period of significant growth over the past year. Some carriers have made a strategic commitment to hiring talent who have worked with multinationals.

Both Singapore and Hong Kong have benefited from this expansion, and telecom firms have been forced to import international expertise to meet demand. But uncertainty over global economic conditions has forced some companies to freeze hiring.

Other local and international carriers continue to hire, so the landscape is mixed, with the best opportunities available for individuals with an understanding of network management, security and multinational corporate requirements.

Some telecom companies have made a strategic commitment to Asia, and are developing their teams as a result. This cyclical growth has peaked, and these are not expected to hire at the same rate as they did in 2012.

All telecom companies are attempting to move up the value chain in the provision of managed services, with a resultant need for candidates with security, cloud technology and network optimisation skills. Demand for candidates with multicultural team experience and the ability to address the business value of telecom propositions remains strong.
