Terence Tsang Chun-kit (below) did a summer internship last year in Britain and later studied in the United States. He believes his international exposure has broadened his outlook and helped him secure internship at PrinCorp Wealth Advisors (Asia), a firm that specialises in retirement planning. It is under Principal Financial Group - a New York-listed company and a member of the Fortune 500. He talks to Wong Yat-hei.

What is your academic background?

I am taking up BBA (Hons) in Finance at City University of Hong Kong. I am a member of the College of Business' Young Scholars Programme that prepares students for future leadership.

How do you start your day?

My work begins with a task list review, followed by a meeting with my teammates on the daily target. Greeting each other with a smile makes our day. Effective communication is vital.

What does your job entail?

I support the wealth advisory team on different marketing functions such as data mining, event planning and market research.

I am also involved in operational duties such as assisting in marketing events and telemarketing exercises. It takes a lot of effort to promote the brand name of a newly established wealth advisory firm like PrinCorp. The difficulty lies in the development of a strategic mindset to work out solutions and align team members' endeavours to meet various projects' targets. To deal with this, I try to apply what I have learned from a strategic management class in the US.

Any advice for potential interns?

"It's the choice - not chance - that determines your destiny." That's a quote from Jean Nidetch. Equally important are the three Ds: determination, diligence and dedication in order to achieve your goals. Although internship is still a trial and error period for students, you can always step up your game.
