The expansion of HSBC's commercial banking operations is creating new opportunities for university graduates in frontline commercial banking serving small- to medium-sized companies.

The bank is investing HK$75 million over three years in its commercial banking business and, since November, has been recruiting 200 frontline staff.

Lena Chan, managing director and head of business banking, says HSBC has established a training programme to help graduates with the right potential to become competent business development managers in about 24 months.

"This is the first time we have offered a programme of this type in our commercial banking sector," Chan says. "We offer a wide spectrum of career development opportunities, including frontline, product specialist, strategies and operational support."

The company is looking for self-motivated individuals with strong interpersonal and communication skills who enjoy working as part of a team. They should also understand customers' needs and help them to pursue business growth.

University graduates with at least two to five years' experience may be considered for assistant vice-president in business centre, relationship management and development. Preferably, candidates should have some sales and service experience in banking, and hold qualifications in insurance and investment.

Chan says an assistant manager with the right credentials and drive could become assistant vice-president for business development in 18 months.
