Baptist University's economics department is offering a master's of science degree in applied economics to help students excel, as rapid changes in information technology, globalisation and the rising economic power of emerging countries reshape the world economy.

Programme director Dr Li Sung-ko says understanding the mechanisms behind changes in the global economy helps individuals make the right business decisions.

"The programme caters to both competent applied economists and potential theoretical researchers. It is designed to strike a balance between advanced theoretical coverage and applied economic analyses from the real world," Li says. "We want to ensure our graduates are able to analyse economic issues relevant to their work and develop strategies to cope with the changing economic environment."

Those in the commercial sector and business students can benefit from a broader view of how the economy runs and also gain professional knowledge.

Courses focus on three core elements: advanced theories, applied analyses and the mainland economy.

"We want the course to be up to date and the mainland economy is the current focus of the world," he says.

Applicants should possess a bachelor's degree from a recognised university, or the equivalent. A degree in economics is preferred but not necessary. Applicants are expected to know intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics, and have had some training in mathematics and statistics. Students without this background may be required to attend remedial courses.

It is a one-year, full-time programme and classes are usually held on weekdays.
