I am aged fifty next month and i feel worried for the rest of my life. I was recessed by the company in April 2009 after working there for 16 years due to company restructuring. I took a long holiday and try to find a job around $10K but failed, i have F.5 level and got 4 passes only though i have the higher certificate of secretarial studies - a night time course but no one recognised. Should people in their fifties spend the rest of their whole life just waiting to die? My heart is full of fear when I wake up every morning and think of that. Can you please help me to find the ways to release my fears. Many thanks, Bonnie

Dear Bonnie, I would focus on the negatives because there are always other options in life. Having only a F5 level education is challenging because there are graduates coming out of school each year which creates lots of competition for you. Instead of being unhappy, you will need to look at it a different way. First, you must simplify your life and expectations. Second, perhaps you have to lower expectations because from what are telling me, $10,000 might still be high given that people at that level do not leave their positions. The only way to compete is on price and to simplify your life. You might even want to find some professional help. Have you look in some of the government boards or through the employment centers? It does take a bit of effort to find work and waiting is not the answer. You might even need to think if you are using the wrong channel or not knowing what you can do compared to what you want to do. |

Finding jobs is about leveraging personal network built over time(it may be beneficial to phone your previous employers and work peers). A few good past references and career highlight may be helpful in an interview. There may be a few courses around to update some key job hunting and survival skills. This may be the opportunity to try something new ! |

are you married ? any kids ? any financial burden ? I understand your feeling, fifty is too young to retire. you are still energetic, try and find a part time job. |
Thanks for all your valuable suggestions, i have attended the course for postnatal workers from ERB now, i will not sit and wait though one of my friends invited me to join their new set up company in the coming Sep or Oct verbally. But, considering my age and qualification, make me feel uneasy as there will be more than 3 expatriate bosses there.
That means will have different voices, trust i can show my best and share my past experiences when i meet them. Sharpening my weapon before i go to interview during this period and attempt to send out my resume. Thanks again for all of you and wish you all have a happy life. Bonnie
