Marketing career in Hong Kong

I graduated from a UK university last September with a bachelor's degree in marketing and advertising. I would like to find a job related to marketing and perhaps take on a management position in three to five years.

I have been working as a campaign executive intern at an SME in the UK over the past four months. I'm due to finish my stint there in June and was thinking about moving to Hong Kong to develop my career.

Before I do that, however, I was hoping to clarify a few things.

Firstly, what exactly is the best way for a fresh graduate to develop a career in marketing?  I'd like to work for the marketing department of a big company, like P&G, but getting that kind of job could be quite difficut.

What kind of position should I take in order to meet my goal of getting into management within three to five years?

Secondly, I was wondering what my chances were of getting a work visa.

I'm origninally from the Mainland and am fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin and English.

Would very much appreciate your advice.

Having the intern experience is great but only working for six months is not really going to justify why an employer in HK needs to hire a junior staff from abroad instead of a local fresh graduate. That’s a big deciding factor. Why don’t you accumulate a few more years of experience in Britain first before trying or why not return to the Mainland to try your luck?

Like Career Doctor said, you could try joining a multinational first and see if you can apply for an internal transfer. Other than that, switch fields and study some professional qualification which the local HK market lacks and then apply, it should help increase the chances of your visa being granted.

I’ve got to be very honest with you – it's very difficult for any fresh grads to find jobs in HK without working permits. Not that companies are reluctant, the policies are strict and complicated, and a time consuming process too!

Any way for a fresh graduate to develop a career in whatever field is by working, working and working! There’s no shortcut. Whether or not you can develop a career – depends on how hard you work and how badly you want to succeed in the field.

Since you're in the UK, and that you're interested in working for multinationals, why don't you try looking for related jobs in the UK first to gain more experience? Knowing your background and your Chinese speaking and writing skills there are always chances for internal transfer within the company.

Of course you may also send applications to the companies you have an interest in which are based in Hong Kong to see if they're willing to give you a chance. It's not easy, but who said life is easy?
