How long should I wait?

Dear Career Doctor,

I am currently looking for job and starting to feel desperate. I had a job interview on January25, the interview went well - last for 1.5 hour ( it's an architect job). I was left to wait for the reply but for about 3 weeks after, I sent an email to a company. I recieve an email from the Director who interviewed me says" Your interview was impressive, and you are still one of my top consideration for current vacancy. Will let you know since my decission is confirmed".

I am very much interested working with this company. And they seemed pretty interested in me at the first place as they invited me for the interview the day after I sent the application. I had been interviewed by one of the company Director and the Associate Director.

It has been 6 weeks, including Chinese New Year. Should I send them an email to ask about the opportunity? I am a foreigner, have time limit to stay in Hong Kong.

Sincerely,

T

Look for long-term and there must have opportunities around. Last time I was asked for an interview, and I came. I was told that I am over qualified yet they will keep my application for reference. Grasp the interview chance, impress them, later they said they have another post suitable. Trust me, it just happens you are stuck now, you will be all right soon. Good luck.

Thank you for all reply !

I did what you guys suggested me to and they called me 3 hrs later, after I sent him and email. However, they didn't offer the job but the other director wants to interview me for different type of projects.

Wish me luck.

Yes, you should! You have the Director's contact number, right? If that's the case, don't waste time sending an email, call him up directly to follow up.

Don't call him first thing in the morning, as it’s best to call after lunch at around 3:00 pm. If he's not around, leave him a message.

Remember, don't be pushy, he does know you're a foreigner, so tell him honestly and explain your situation. If you're still on the top of his list, let him know you'll do whatever it takes and costs to stay and wait, otherwise you may need to plan your next step.

Write back to let me know the outcome please. Good Luck!

The fact that you have a limited time to stay in HK is a valid enough reason for you to write to the company. Be polite about it, ask if the recruitment process is progressing well, and how you can help to move it along. Stress that you are very interested in the position, and if you are a good fit, you want to take it to the next step before your visitor visa expires.

Good luck!
