Dear Doc,

I graduated from a US University (top 30) in 2009 (econ major) and came back to Hong Kong right before the Chinese New Year. I started looking for jobs after the holidays, however, didn't get any good offers. Most of the companies that call me for an interviews are those insurance company (I heard they will force you to pay back the salary if you didn't reach their sales target). I even applied for those 6-8K jobs on the labor department website, but still not getting any feedback at all. The only reason that I think of is lack of any internship/working experience, is that the reason??? Doc, any company you know of are hiring newbies?! Please, I really really need some help here. Thanks.

There are many companies willing to hire freshies because fresh graduates are mouldable. Your greatest asset is your youth. Since you just graduated, without any work experience, potential employers will look at your academic results. If you have impressive academic result, don't worry, there will be companies hiring you. Be patient.

With major in economics, why don't you try to apply for a position in a government division like the HK Monetary Authority?

Btw, do you have American accent? If yes, this definitely will get you a banking job.

There are of course companies hiring fresh grads here in HK, otherwise we'll have streets full of unemployed.

You haven't been able to land a job simply because you don't have a focus, when you try to be everything you're nothing!

What qualities would employers be looking for when hiring fresh grads? Definitely not experience for sure, knowing too well you guys don't have it, can you tell me what then? The other way round, what do you have to sell? What skills or anything special about you that make you a fit candidate for that particular position?

So you "heard" insurance companies do force employees to pay back salaries, ever bother to prove if that's true? Finding a sales job as a start is always easier, insurance or in other industries the same.

Graduated from a Top US 30 University is not a selling point, it's YOU, what and who that matters. If you ask me, even some part time jobs in McDonalds or 7-11 is valuable, very good training indeed. Otherwise some charity or volunteering jobs rather than sitting at home wasting time trying to figure out if there's anyone hiring when certainly there are lots of opportunities out there, you need to walk out of your door and reach your hands out to explore and grab. No more time to waste, you can't afford it, no one can!

What do you really want/need? What type of job are you aiming at? What are your job interests? Focus on your inner self, not search for job hunting skills.

You are true that it is hard to get a job in HK without relevant experiences. However, that does not mean impossible. With perseverance, you will finally succeed in the end, though it really takes some time. If you are fortunate enough, maybe a few months. If not, one to two years.
