The Lok Ma Chau China-Hong Kong Freight Association says the cargo freight industry is facing a shortage of truck drivers, reports the Hong Kong Economic Times. The association says despite an increase in income from HK$270-HK$300 to HK$300-HK$350 per container shipment, companies cannot hire enough drivers. There is a labour shortage of 20 per cent in the industry. Many truck drivers are driving taxis now and have no intention of returning to the industry. About 10 per cent of Hong Kong's cargo truck drivers are older than 60.

Australian universities face exodus of mainland students

Australian universities may suffer a drop in enrolment of students from the mainland, says Chris Evans, the Australian tertiary education minister. An education for a Chinese student in Australia is 50 per cent more expensive than it was at the start of last year. Evans says Chinese students are looking for quality and prestige, rather than value for money, as most are postgraduates. More than one in three of the 212,000 overseas students are from the mainland. Xinhua  

Exhausted junior doctors in Australia fight back  

Junior doctors in Australia are taking action against hospitals that force them to work more than 100 hours a week, putting patients' lives at risk, reports The Sydney Morning Herald. "A junior doctor who mis-writes a drug chart because they are tired can put someone's life at risk, and their own career is over. It's not on," says Dr Steve Hambleton, the vice-president of the Australian Medical Association.
