Switching careers is not easy

Switching careers can be daunting even when the economy is recovering and employers in key sectors are talking about a shortage of talent. But the transition to a new role or industry is easier if you first pinpoint why a change of scene could make sense for you.

This requires realism, creative thinking and strategic planning.

There may be "push" factors involved concerning your present position, such as limited opportunities for promotion or a boss you can't stand any more. Or "pull" factors could be providing the impetus - better packages elsewhere, a call from a headhunter, or the feeling that it's time to try something new.

Whatever your motivation, you should prepare by first setting some clear goals and a plan of action, and writing them down to ensure they are realistic. Then look for jobs that match your aptitudes and interests, and search for companies whose values seem to reflect your own.

Be financially and psychologically ready for a move. There is no guarantee that a new role in a different sector will bring the same salary as your present job. Look at the bigger picture and get ready to think long-term.

Identify transferable skills. These might include fluency in Putonghua, computer literacy, or experience running a sales campaign. If you are short on such skills, you have less chance of success.
